Working offline
Where your book is stored, what the save indicator is telling you, and the one state worth acting on.
Your book lives on your device. Every edit is written there as you make it, and uploaded when there is a connection.
So: a closed tab costs nothing, a train tunnel costs nothing, and a server outage is invisible while you write. Import, layout and export all run in the browser too — the only thing a connection buys is a font you have not downloaded yet.
The save indicator
Top right, beside the History button. In order of what it is telling you:

The last three are the ones to act on. The rest are status.
Installing the studio
Installing gives the studio its own window and a place in your dock, and it makes the browser less likely to evict your books when storage runs low.
In Safari, use Share then Add to Dock — the dialog says so when no install prompt is available.
Two devices
A book is stored per device. Editing on a laptop and a phone means two local copies, kept in step through the server.
If the same paragraph is edited in both places before either has synced, the remote version wins and yours is preserved rather than lost — see version history.
What is never uploaded
The manuscript is uploaded as a backup and to reach your other devices. Nothing is uploaded in order to work: the file you import is read locally, the pages are laid out locally, and the PDF and EPUB are written locally.
